Socialistic realism and my early days

Honestly, one of the reasons, why I decided to become a sculptor at age of 14, growing up in post soviet Latvia, was the impact of the monumental sculpture of the Soviet Era. During the Soviet times, sculptors where only official millionaires and in a very high social position. Monumental sculpture was the visual propaganda tool for the regime and thats why it was well payed job. To be a sculptor back then was to be like a movie star nowadays. I was really excited and took the path on becoming a sculptor. By the time when I graduated Art Academy of Latvia at 2006 all was changed. However, being a sculptor in modern democratic society is way more fun and the creativity and freedom of expression is limitless.

Within the Anatomy 4 Sculptors project, I did research on socialist realism sculpture to determine the most useful ways on shaping and simplifying the forms of human figure. Soviet sculptors where good in simplifying and rationalizing the human form. This knowledge will be useful for designing the books block-out features.

Just for a record, Socialist Realism was the officially sanctioned style of art that dominated Soviet painting for 50 years from the early 1930s. The style and content was laid down by the state with the purpose of furthering the goals of socialism and communism. The result was a huge body of work by thousands of artists, the majority of which is stultifyingly boring and which has been mocked in the West ever since as “Girl meets tractor”. However, among all this art there were some artists who, whilst working loosely within the structures of Socialist Realism, managed to create work of interest and originality.
